Frequently Asked Questions

Who do you serve? Do you sell to the public/retail?

  • We serve restaurants, grocery stores, supermarkets, retailers, senior living facilities, hotels, caterers, food trucks, and more! Our services do not currently provide retail sales to the public; however, we do hope to expand this side of our company in the future.

What areas do you service?

  • We are a wholesale seafood supplier providing next-day deliveries to the finest establishments throughout Virginia and the Outer Banks of North Carolina. These areas include all of Hampton Roads, Richmond, Northern Neck and Middle Peninsula, Eastern Shore, Charlottesville, Harrisonburg, Staunton, Lynchburg, Fredericksburg, and Outer Banks, NC.

Do you offer delivery? What is the minimum?

  • We do offer delivery Monday through Saturday, depending on territory, and our minimum is $250.

Do you offer pick up?

  • We offer pick-up services Monday-Friday 8AM to 3PM for our customers.

How is your fish processed?

  • Every fresh fish request is hand-cut to order ensuring the freshest quality delivered to your door. Our team of cutting experts can cut your fish any way you’d like, including specialty cuts. If you prefer your fish whole, we can scale and gut at your request.

How do I know if a fish is fresh? How do I keep it fresh?

  • The eyes of a fresh fish should be clear, gills should be red, and flesh should bounce back after touch when receiving whole fish. To indicate the quality of fresh fish fillets, strong odors should not be present, and fillets should be slightly firm. Keeping seafood fresh is one of our priorities, and all fresh seafood should be kept in a cold place on ice at 32°F. Fresh fish fillets should be wrapped in moisture-proof paper, plastic wrap, or containers – do not place fillets directly on ice, this will cause your fillets to deteriorate.

Are you choosing sustainable seafood?

  • We carefully source our products by assessing each vendor, from quality checks to sustainability efforts. We hold ourselves to a high standard and expect the same from our partners. When you buy from Sam Rust, you’ll always be in the know about the fish you purchase. In conjunction with local, federal, and global monitoring and regulatory agencies, Sam Rust works to ensure endangered species are protected for future generations. One of the local agencies we work with on sustainability is the Sensible Seafood Program alongside the Virginia Aquarium & Marine Science Center. We partner with them to promote ocean-friendly seafood that comes from sustainable sources and help identify the best options for consumers.

Sam Rust partners with a number of local organizations as a way to give back to the community that supports us. We recognize the importance of supporting causes right here in Virginia, and take great care to source as much of our seafood from local boats and fishermen as possible.
